Is it safe to travel to Russia in 2026?

Short answer

There is no single yes-or-no answer. Many countries โ€” including the US, UK, Canada and most of the EU โ€” currently advise against all or non-essential travel to Russia, and that advisory has real consequences for insurance, consular help and flights. Some travellers (often from visa-free or e-Visa countries with normal relations) do still visit major cities without incident. If you go, you must plan around sanctions: most Western bank cards do not work, direct flights from many countries are suspended, and standard travel insurance may be void. Always check your own government's current advisory before booking.

Government travel advisories

The single most important input is your own government's official travel advice. As of 2026, a number of Western governments maintain a 'do not travel' or 'reconsider travel' advisory for Russia, citing the security situation, the risk of arbitrary detention and very limited ability of embassies to help their citizens. Other governments โ€” particularly those with normal bilateral relations โ€” have no such warning.

Advisories differ enormously by nationality. A blanket statement online does not apply to everyone. Read the advisory page of YOUR foreign ministry, dated, before you decide.

Getting there: flights

Direct air links between Russia and many Western countries remain suspended, and Russian carriers are barred from much of EU/US/UK airspace. Most visitors now route through hub countries that still operate flights โ€” for example via the Gulf (UAE, Qatar), Turkey, Central Asia or other connections. Build extra time and cost into any itinerary, and confirm that your transit country does not itself require a visa.

Money: cards, cash and sanctions

This is where most unprepared travellers get caught out. Visa and Mastercard issued outside Russia generally do NOT work inside the country โ€” not at ATMs, hotels or shops. There is no reliable way to draw on a foreign bank account once you arrive.

  • Bring enough cash for your whole trip (commonly USD or EUR, exchanged locally into roubles).
  • Do not rely on your home debit/credit card for anything.
  • Mobile-payment apps tied to foreign banks will also fail.
  • Keep cash split between secure locations rather than in one wallet.

Travel insurance

Many standard policies exclude destinations under a government 'advise against travel' notice โ€” which can void medical and repatriation cover precisely when you most need it. If you travel, look specifically for a policy that covers Russia under the current advisory, and read the exclusions. Note that a Russian visa application itself may require proof of medical insurance valid in Russia.

On the ground

Visitors who do go typically report that day-to-day life in major cities like Moscow and St Petersburg continues fairly normally. The practical frictions are sanctions-related (cards, flights, some app and website blocks) rather than visible disorder. Standard precautions apply: keep your documents and migration card safe, complete any required registration, avoid demonstrations, and keep your embassy's contact details handy โ€” while understanding that consular assistance may be very limited.

Documents to keep on you

Your passport, visa (or e-Visa confirmation), and migration card. You may be asked to show proof of registration if you stay beyond the threshold โ€” see our migration card and registration guides below.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to travel to Russia in 2026?

There is no universal answer. Many Western governments advise against travel, which affects insurance and consular support, while travellers from countries with normal relations often visit major cities without incident. Always check your own government's current, dated advisory before booking.

Do foreign bank cards work in Russia?

Generally no. Visa and Mastercard issued outside Russia do not work at ATMs, hotels or shops due to sanctions. Bring enough cash for your entire trip and exchange it locally into roubles.

Are there direct flights to Russia?

Direct flights from many Western countries are suspended. Most travellers connect via hubs such as the UAE, Qatar, Turkey or Central Asia. Confirm whether your transit country needs a separate visa.

Will my travel insurance cover Russia?

Often not. Many policies exclude destinations under an 'advise against travel' notice. Look for a policy that explicitly covers Russia under the current advisory and read the exclusions carefully.
