Troubleshooting & FAQ

Can I get a Russian business visa without my own company?

A common misconception is that a business visa requires you to own a company. In reality the requirement is an invitation from a Russian receiving party — which an agency can arrange on your behalf.

Short answer

Yes. You do not need to own, register or run a company in Russia (or anywhere else) to obtain a Russian business visa. The business visa is built around an invitation issued by a Russian receiving party — a company, organisation or, for the e-Visa route, no invitation at all. If you have no business partner in Russia, an authorised agency can issue the invitation (by MFA, Telex or GUVM) for you, so an individual traveller can still apply for a business visa.

What a business visa actually requires

A Russian business visa is granted on the strength of a business invitation, not on proof that you own a business. The invitation is issued inside Russia by a receiving party and can take the form of an MFA (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) invitation, an electronic Telex sent directly to your consulate, or a document from the Migration Service (GUVM/FMS). Your own employment status — employee, freelancer, director or none of these — does not change your eligibility.

If you have no business partner in Russia

Most applicants do not have a Russian company ready to invite them. In that case an authorised visa-support agency acts as (or arranges) the receiving party and issues a valid business invitation for the entries and validity you need — single, double or multiple-entry, up to one year. You then submit that invitation with your passport and application at the Russian consulate or visa centre.

Owning a company is not a condition

Neither Russian nor foreign company ownership is required. The business visa documents your purpose of travel (meetings, negotiations, conferences, contracts), evidenced by the invitation — not your corporate status.

Business visa vs e-Visa for short trips

If you are from one of the 64 e-Visa-eligible countries and your trip is short (single entry, up to 30 days), the unified e-Visa lets you travel for business purposes online with no invitation at all. For longer stays, multiple entries or non-eligible nationalities, the standard business visa with an agency-issued invitation is the route.

How to get a Russian business visa without your own company

  1. 1

    Order a business invitation

Ask an authorised agency to issue an MFA, Telex or GUVM business invitation for the entries and validity you need — no company of your own is required.

  2. 2

    Prepare your documents

Passport (6+ months validity, 2+ blank pages), photo, completed application form and, where required, travel insurance.

  3. 3

Apply at the consulate or visa centre

Submit the invitation and documents at the Russian consulate or authorised visa centre that serves your country of residence.

  4. 4

    Register on arrival

Once in Russia, ensure your stay is registered (your hotel or host/receiving party handles this, usually within 7 working days).

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to register a company in Russia to get a business visa?

No. You do not need to own or register a company anywhere. The business visa is based on a business invitation issued by a Russian receiving party, which an authorised agency can arrange for an individual traveller.

Where can I buy a business visa invitation?

An authorised visa-support agency can issue a business invitation (by MFA, Telex or GUVM). The cost depends on the validity and number of entries (single, double or multiple).

Can an individual get a Russian business visa?

Yes. An individual with no Russian business partner can still apply, because the agency acts as or arranges the receiving party that issues the invitation.

How long can I stay on a business visa?

Business visas can be single, double or multiple-entry and valid for up to one year, with stays usually capped at 90 days in any 180-day period.
