Russian migration registration: the 7-working-day rule explained
Registration is one of the most misunderstood Russian entry rules. Here is who is responsible, when the deadline falls, and how to stay compliant.
Short answer
Foreign visitors must be registered with Russia's migration authorities within seven working days of arrival. If you stay in a hotel, the hotel registers you automatically at check-in. If you stay in private accommodation, your host (the inviting party or property owner) must submit the registration to the local GUVM office or post office. Keep the detachable registration slip with your migration card and passport for the whole trip and present it on departure.
When the clock starts
The registration deadline is seven working days from your date of arrival in Russia — weekends and public holidays are not counted. Short stays of a few working days may not require registration at all, but you should still confirm this for your specific itinerary.
Who registers you
- Hotels, hostels and sanatoriums register guests automatically at check-in — you do not need to do anything beyond presenting your passport and migration card.
- If you stay in a private flat or with friends, your host is legally responsible for submitting your registration to the local GUVM office or an authorised post office.
- If you move city and stay more than seven working days in the new location, you generally need to register again there.
Keep the slip
You will receive a detachable registration slip. Keep it with your passport and migration card for the entire trip and hand it over with the migration card when you leave.
If you miss the deadline
Failure to register can lead to a fine and, in serious or repeated cases, problems on departure or with future entries. If your host has not registered you in time, contact the local migration office promptly rather than ignoring the issue.
Frequently asked questions
Who is responsible for my registration in Russia?
Your host. In a hotel that is the hotel; in private accommodation it is the inviting party or property owner, who files the registration with the local GUVM office or post office.
Is the deadline 7 calendar days or working days?
Working days. The seven-day registration window excludes weekends and Russian public holidays, counted from your arrival date.
Do I need to register again if I travel to another city?
If you stay in another location for more than seven working days, you generally need to register at that new address as well.
What happens if I am not registered?
You can face a fine and possible difficulties on exit or with future visas. If your host fails to register you on time, contact the local migration office as soon as possible.
